Tremaine Edmunds – 2021 Dynasty IDP #5 Linebacker
#49 Tremaine Edmunds, BUF
bio:
Dynasty IDP Tremaine Edmunds is IDPE’s #5 dynasty Linebacker in 2021. Buffalo Middle Linebacker (MLB) drafted in the 1st round (#16 overall) out of Virginia Tech in the 2018 draft. Was a finalist for the Butkus Award, but has not yet been named an All-Pro in his young career.
attributes:
An athletic, sideline-to-sideline, every down 4th year linebacker. He has high end athleticism and size for his position. He has an elite College Prospect Score (CPS) and grades out as at least average in every category of the model. Edmunds was an elite prospect.
Age* | Height | Weight | 40 | SPARQ | CPS |
23.4 | 6’5″ | 253 | 4.54 | 127 | 13.4 |
player grade:
Edmunds struggles in all three phases of the game (run defense, pass coverage, pass rush) per PFF.com. He has been inconsistent in his reads so far in his career and over-pursues at times, but he has the athleticism and length to stay in plays. While he took a step forward in his 2nd year, he took a large step backward in his 3rd year, which is not a great sign for his long-term prospects.
Year | Overall | Run Defense | Pass Rush | Coverage |
2018 | 57.0 | 54.9 | 71.0 | 55.4 |
2019 | 60.6 | 69.2 | 61.5 | 52.2 |
2020 | 47.9 | 59.4 | 41.8 | 44.4 |
injury:
He missed 1 game in 2018 due to a concussion and 1 game in 2020 due to a shoulder sprain.
tackles:
He has eclipsed 110 combined tackles in every season of his young career. Therefore, he has a safe floor in IDP.
Year | SOLO | AST | COMBINED | A4I* |
2018 | 80 | 41 | 121 | 129 |
2019 | 66 | 49 | 115 | 115 |
2020 | 77 | 42 | 119 | 127 |
big plays:
Edmunds makes impact plays all over the field, but made less big plays in 2020. As a result, his upside may be somewhat limited unless there is some positive regression in 2021.
Year | SACK | STF | INT | PD | FF | FR |
2018 | 2.0 | 5 | 2 | 12 | 2 | 0 |
2019 | 1.5 | 10 | 1 | 9 | 0 | 0 |
2020 | 2.0 | 4 | 0 | 3 | 0 | 0 |
contract:
Edmunds is still on his rookie contract, which expires after this season. Buffalo has a 5th year option available. If the option is not employed or if he is not resigned to a long-term deal, this could be a sign that Buffalo does not believe he can improve the mental side of his game and his long-term dynasty value will be in question.
summary:
Dynasty IDP Tremaine Edmunds is one of the highest upside linebackers, despite some real life limitations. Unusually young for a 4th year linebacker, hopefully he can take a mental step forward or Buffalo can devise a friendlier scheme for him. Expect him to compete as a Top 10 LB in 2021 and dynasty going forward, though he comes with some long-term risk if his play doesn’t improve.
